(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: A petition drive will be launched to prove the majority of MPs support the reconvening of Parliament as soon as possible, says Pakatan Harapan (PH).
In a statement, PH’s presidential council said the signatures will then be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
On Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s proposal to set up a committee to study the reconvening of Parliament, the council said it would only join the committee provided that Parliament sittings resume before August 1.
“In accordance with Article 150 (3) of the Federal Constitution, a Parliament session must be held before August 1 so that the emergency ordinance can be tabled and deliberated upon by MPs.
“At the same time, this expedited session will provide space for MPs to discuss the National Recovery Plan, measures to address the Covid-19 pandemic, and the need to increase assistance to the public,” it said.
PH reiterated its hope that Parliament should reconvene as soon as possible to uphold the wishes of the King and the Malay Rulers.
The statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Recently, Muhyiddin said a committee comprising government and opposition representatives would be formed to look into important aspects before Parliament reconvenes.
He said the government needed to scrutinise all matters to avoid problems after its implementation, adding that he had been advised by the attorney-general that Putrajaya’s actions must be in line with the Constitution.
Last week, the King said he wanted Parliament to reconvene as soon as possible, to allow for the emergency ordinances and national recovery plan to be debated by MPs. - FMT
