Perkasa Lodges Police Report Over News Linking Agong To 5g Contract

Perkasa has lodged a police report over media reports that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar owns shares in U Mobile Sdn Bhd, which was appointed as the country’s second 5G network operator.
Party president Syed Hasan Syed Ali expressed concern that the media reports could tarnish the image of the royal institution.
“So, I ask the police to investigate because this involves the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“If (media reports) are not correct, this is an insult, a slander to the Malay rulers. That’s what I'm worried about,” he told reporters at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur after lodging the report.
When asked which news agency he was referring to, Syed Hasan (above, right) said several media outlets, including Malaysiakini.
Last Friday, the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) explained that the selection was made after a careful process, including detailed discussions on technical and commercial aspects.
Syed Hasan also said it was impossible for Sultan Ibrahim to be involved in businesses because he was known to be strict in matters of governance and integrity.
Second-largest shareholder
As of Nov 4, Companies Commission records show that Sultan Ibrahim is the second-largest U Mobile shareholder with a 22.3 percent stake.
The largest shareholder is Straits Mobile Investments Pte Ltd (48.3 percent stake), which is wholly owned by Singaporean investment company Temasek Holdings.
Following the MCMC announcement, U Mobile said it would reduce its foreign shareholding to 20 percent.
Syed Hasan said media reports on the matter have only confused people further.
“When the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is associated with a company and (reportedly) has a 22 percent stake in U Mobile, the people are a bit confused as to whether this news is true or false news.
“Because the people know that the Malay rulers cannot be involved in businesses as stated in the Federal Constitution,” he added.
According to Article 34(3) of the Federal Constitution, the Agong cannot actively engage in any commercial enterprise. - Mkini
