Perak Dap Headed For A Huge Showdown
(FMT) – Perak DAP is heading for a big showdown at its triennial elections next week, with a faction led by two MPs trying to win control of the state leadership from the cousins Ngeh Koo Ham-Nga Kor Ming who have led the state for more than a decade.
Kampar MP Thomas Su, who is mounting a strong challenge against the incumbents, announced 15 candidates from his side today with Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran as his running mate. Others in his faction are assemblymen Terence Naidu (Pasir Bedemar), Leow Thye Yih (Pokok Assam) and former Menglembu assemblyman Keong Meng Sing.
The rest are members, some holding positions at branch level.
Su, a former state organising secretary from 1999 to 2010, said he announced the full list (of 15 candidates) in the hope of securing the lion’s share of the votes next week.
“We unveiled our list today as the other side has yet to make an announcement,” he told FMT.
The other faction is led by incumbent state chairman Nga, the Teluk Intan MP and Aulong assemblyman who is backed by Ngeh, the Beruas MP.
It is common knowledge that the state leadership over the last 10 years has been controlled by Nga and Ngeh.
Su said the state meeting and election, was scheduled to be held on March 14, but it was unclear how it was going to be conducted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said about 2,000 delegates from 300 branches were eligible to attend the meeting and elect the state committee for the next three years.
Both Su and Kula, who was a state treasurer and secretary from 1997 to 2008, have had a strained relationship with the cousins and were not elected to the state committee the last time round despite being elected representatives.
Under the party constitution, the 15 elected candidates will then proceed to choose the office bearers including the posts of chairman, deputy chairman and two vice-chairmen.
