Penang Activists Rally Against Climate Change

A group of 50 activists rallied outside Universiti Sains Malaysia in George Town, Penang, today to call for climate justice, condemning the greed of the powerful and failure of the authorities to contain global climate change

Describing their rally as Global Climate Strike for Better Future, the group stood by the curb, carrying colorful and creative placards which boldly scream "Earth is Dying, Think Green", "200 Species Go Extinct Daily" and "Care for Climate Change, Earth Burns, People Suffer" and "Swap Out Your 4A Bicycle"
They shouted anti-climate change slogans, calling for the earth to be saved, while repeating their five demands to address the situation as passing drivers honked at them
They said "no to greed of the powerful and Penang's insistence on carrying reclamation excercise" in the southern post of the island
A representative of Serikat Mahasiswa USM, comprising students, past and present, Ahmad Izuddin Azmi, read out the groups' five demands:transform to low carbon economy;build environment-friendly infrastructure;create green, sustainable and "sponge" cities;create a better and transparent environment management system; and,get youths to be more caring and interested in climate change issues."The adults have promised to stop climate change but year after year, they have not lived up to their responsibilities," said Ahmad Izuddin

"This rally, Climate Strike, is a desperate call to our own (younger) generation; this is a starting point to gather and network so we can find solutions to this biggest challenge of human history," he added.
"If we do not do anything now, our children - we ourselves - will suffer the effects of climate change," he said
The rally joins a world-wide movement, led mostly by environmentally-conscious students, and inspired by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg
Also seen at the rally were Penang Forum's Khoo Salma Nasution and Aliran's Anil Netto, PSM central committee member Choo Chon Kai and local councillor Cameron Kang.  - Mkini
