Peja Denies Pn Mps Signing Sds To Overthrow Govt
Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu has denied rumours of Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs signing statutory declarations (SD) to overthrow the federal government.
He maintained that the opposition’s main focus, for now, was to win the upcoming elections in six states.
“PN has not made any SDs. We have 74 seats (in Parliament) and are aware of our responsibility to be a credible opposition. That is what we will continue to do.
“PN’s focus today is to try to maintain the state governments in Terengganu, Kelantan, and Kedah as well as to take over the state governments in Selangor, Penang, and Negeri Sembilan in the state elections,” he told reporters after attending an event organised by the Gombak Setia assemblyperson’s office this morning.
Faizal (above), who is former Tambun MP, was asked to comment on a cryptic Facebook post by Bersatu leader Muhammad Faiz Na’aman, who seemingly implied that PN had the support of 126 MPs to form a government.
Rumours about a change of administration - or prime minister - started as soon as Pakatan Harapan formed an alliance with BN to form a government following the 15th general election last year.
Despite having the most seats, Harapan - led by chairperson Anwar Ibrahim - did not have enough numbers to form a simple majority.
Harapan then cooperated with BN, despite its long feud to form a majority, with Anwar taking the helm as prime minister. They were joined by coalition parties in Sabah and Sarawak.
‘Anwar used to say that too’
However, claims of a coup to oust Anwar resurfaced last month, followed by Faiz’s cryptic post.
“A reporter asked about the 126 (number of seats). I apologised and said that there was no comment. Just wait and see. I never said what the number was (for), right?
“But Anwar, too, used to always say ‘I have the numbers’,” Faiz said regarding his post.
However, Faizal felt that Faiz’s Facebook post was not related to the number of MPs supporting PN.
“I don’t think he said there was the support of 126 (MPs). (The media) will have to check with him again, that was not what he said.
“He never said 126 (MPs giving) support, people can say all kinds of things about that post,” he said.
Meanwhile, Faizal also denied rumours that opposition MPs have signed statutory declarations to appoint PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin as prime minister.
“I don't think so, I don't believe it.
“We shouldn’t be thinking too much about SDs, let us think about serving the rakyat. That is what we should do,” he said.
No overthrowing govt ‘daydreams’
Meanwhile, Hamzah called Anwar delirious and that he was afraid of the fragility of his position as prime minister.
He said there was no “weekly daydream” of PN overthrowing the government.
“I want to inform him (Anwar) that I do not dream (about overthrowing the government) every week. I want to ask the reason you are delirious (because) I never said anything.
“Since he became prime minister, I have only told him in Parliament that he is no longer the leader of the opposition. I am the opposition leader,” he said when speaking at the Central PAS Open House at the Complex Pass Kedah, Alor Setar, today.
Opposition leader Hamzah ZainudinYesterday, Anwar challenged the opposition to submit their statutory declarations in the next parliamentary sitting.
After making repeated claims of having the numbers since the 2008 general election, Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairperson, managed to secure sufficient support following the last national polls to form a coalition government.
Following a brief political deadlock, the coalition government was formed with 82 seats from Harapan, BN (30), GPS (23), GRS (six), Warisan (three), KDM (two), plus one from Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), and the independent MP, Vernon Bahanda.
Although switching camps had become a common feature in Malaysian politics, the anti-hopping law passed last year would require an MP who defects to vacate his or her post.
Political parties can still shift their allegiance en bloc, but Harapan and BN have enough seats on their own to maintain majority control over Parliament even if GPS, GRS, Warisan, KDM, PBM, and the independent MP decide to back PN.
Such a scenario would leave BN and Harapan with 112 MPs – just enough for a simple majority.
The upcoming litmus test for Anwar’s coalition government is the six state elections in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan. - Mkini
