Pas Pledges Loyalty To Muhyiddin Amid Calls For Him To Resign
After Umno reaffirmed its support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) last night, PAS also expressed its undivided loyalty to Muhyiddin Yassin's leadership in the ruling coalition.
This came after calls for the prime minister to resign following his proposal to declare a state of emergency amid the third wave of Covid-19 was rejected by Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
In a statement today, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan stressed all 18 PAS parliamentarians supported PN to ensure that “the safety, economic life and national order are guaranteed”.
The Islamic party leader also urged BN lawmakers to remain consistent in backing Muhyiddin.
"At the same time, PAS calls on all BN parliamentarians to remain steadfast in supporting the leadership of the premier and the PN government, which was being built following the collapse of Pakatan Harapan," he said.
"Let us urge Malaysians to pray for continued protection so that the (Covid-19) outbreak could fade soon and our country will become safe again," added the de facto law minister.
Snap polls after Covid crisis
Meanwhile, BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi met BN parliamentarians at a four-hour meeting yesterday to hear their views.
Some of them called for BN's support for the ruling PN coalition, while former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak raised the possibility of cooperating with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim instead.
There were a number of BN lawmakers who insisted on a snap election as soon as Covid-19 is brought under control, suggesting that the truce may not last until the next general election in about two years.
The Umno supreme council, which met later last night to deliberate on the views and proposals of BN lawmakers, reaffirmed BN's support for PN.
However, Umno wanted better cooperation with PN and a relationship that is based on "respect" and "political consensus".
