PETALING JAYA: PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has come to Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar’s defence after posters calling for Samsuri to resign as Terengganu menteri besar was put up in the state.
Tuan Ibrahim said the central PAS leadership and the Terengganu party leadership had no issues with Samsuri, fondly known as Dr Sam.
“There’s no need to entertain these demands,” he told FMT.
He also described the posters as a cheap tactic to discredit the party’s achievements, including in governing the east coast state.
His statement comes hours after a Terengganu executive councillor denied that Samsuri’s administration was in turmoil, in response to the appearance of the posters.
Hanafiah Mat called on those responsible to stop their actions, as they could spark anxiety among the people of the state.
“We, the executive councillors and the assemblymen, are all behind Samsuri and will remain loyal (to him),” he told FMT, adding that Samsuri’s ties with those in government and the elected representatives were solid.
Hanafiah, who is the welfare, women development, family and national unity committee chairman, also blamed “hidden hands” for spreading the narrative that Samsuri’s government was in trouble.
However, he did not identify anyone in particular.
The posters calling for Samsuri’s resignation were reported to have been put up at several locations, prompting netizens to ask whether there was discord in the state government.
Samsuri, who is also a PAS vice-president, is viewed as a technocrat, one of two factions that members are divided along. The other is the ulama faction.
Last month, Samsuri suggested that he may not seek re-election at the party’s upcoming elections.
Samsuri, who has been a PAS vice-president since 2019, also said he did not consider himself qualified to take over the party’s top post following speculation that the top two posts were likely to be contested for the first time in 10 years. - FMT
