Pas Mulls Legal Challenge Turun Anwar 2 0 Over Us Trade Pact
PAS has not ruled out taking legal action, including filing a judicial review or staging another protest against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, dubbed “Turun Anwar 2.0”, in response to Malaysia’s reciprocal trade agreement with the United States.
According to party information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (above), PAS is also considering holding a forum featuring professionals and academics to shed light on the far-reaching implications of the deal.
“PAS calls on all Malaysians to remain vigilant and united in defending the nation’s dignity and sovereignty from any form of new economic colonialism disguised under the banner of ‘trade and digitalisation’,” he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang invoked a serpent metaphor to describe Malaysia’s cooperation with the US - likening them to an “ular lidi” (bronzeback tree snake) and an anaconda.
ADSHadi said the anaconda devours other animals such as wild boars, deer, tapirs, tigers, cows, buffaloes, and goats - as well as larger prey after first weakening and crushing them.

PAS president Abdul Hadi AwangThe bronzeback tree snake, however, the Marang MP noted, can only consume small creatures like crickets, cockroaches, grasshoppers, frogs, and mice.
Calls for resignation
On Nov 3, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad urged Anwar and his cabinet to step down for allegedly jeopardising Malaysia’s sovereignty.
Along with several NGOs and political parties, Mahathir also announced their 12 joint resolutions to reject the trade agreement.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir MohamadHowever, Anwar urged his critics to stop the attacks and insisted the agreement was scrutinised by the Attorney-General’s Chambers to ensure it was consistent with the Federal Constitution before being signed.
Defending the deal, AGC stressed that the implementation of obligations and commitments under the agreement by Malaysia is subject to applicable domestic laws and procedures.
The agency also said Malaysia has the right to terminate the agreement at any time through written notice without requiring Washington’s consent. - Mkini
