Pas Calls Pact With Opposition A Mature Way To Deal With Crisis

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and opposition leaders have reached a consensus for a ceasefire and to strengthen the function of Parliament as a check and balance on the executive.PETALING JAYA: PAS has welcomed the cross-party political cooperation under Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, calling it mature politics as the country struggles with health, economic and social crisis.
In a move away from the party’s usual hard stance against the opposition, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the cooperation was in line with the current political reality as no party holds majority after GE14.
“PAS is confident the government will continue to interact and create more cooperation with all stakeholders, including the opposition, to carry out reform in all sectors, institutions and within the society.
“It is a good start to form a new political landscape that values well-being, harmony and justice for all,” the Kota Bharu MP said in a statement.
The former de facto law minister added that the response from main opposition leaders to cooperate in the national recovery efforts by the government gives space for all parties to contribute ideas and suggestions to fight the ongoing health and economic crisis.
Yesterday,  the prime minister and opposition Pakatan Harapan reached a consensus to strengthen the function of Parliament as a check and balance on the executive, which has been described as “political ceasefire” that would smoothen further cooperation in Parliament.
In a rare joint statement signed by Ismail and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, they agreed on and understood the importance of the independence of the judiciary, institutional reforms, and good governance.
Prior to his resignation, former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin had proposed a bipartisan cooperation if he could win a vote of confidence which was scheduled to be held on Sept 6. - FMT
