Parties Free Of Corruption Should Not Fear Being Probed Anwar
Political parties should not fear action by the authorities including the MACC if they are free from corruption, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
During a press conference at the PKR headquarters this evening, the Pakatan Harapan chairperson pointed out that such actions, including the freezing of bank accounts belonging to political parties, are not new and should be allowed to proceed without interference.
"When Umno had its accounts frozen, Muhyiddin (Yassin) at the time supported the move," Anwar said in reference to the Bersatu president's former stint as prime minister.
"Muhyiddin even praised the MACC’s professionalism.
“If you’re clean, then don’t be scared," he added.
The PKR president said Bersatu should be prepared to provide explanations where needed and not interfere with enforcement bodies, whether it is the police, Inland Revenue Board or MACC.
"And if there is prosecution, let the judiciary act independently.”
Bersatu president Muhyiddin YassinAnwar also cautioned politicians against using religious or racial rhetoric to justify corruption.
"How is it possible for any religion to be used to defend corruption and abuse of power, what more Islam which firmly rejects the abuse of power and corruption?" he noted.
Last week, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the probe into Bersatu's accounts, saying that two party accounts had been frozen to facilitate investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act.
The revelation came just two days after the party declared its 2020 and 2021 accounts, in an attempt to counter allegations of corruption.
On Thursday, Muhyiddin said his party will write a letter to the MACC with a request to unfreeze its accounts, citing a need to ease the party's operations including paying wages to its staff and office rentals. - Mkini
