Parliament To Debate Batu Puteh Rci Report Next Week
The Dewan Rakyat is set to debate the report from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the handling of the Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks, and South Ledge sovereignty dispute next week, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He revealed that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said will table a motion to debate the report.
“The cabinet meeting today did not specifically discuss this report. However, Azalina informed the cabinet that it has been tabled and that she will bring a motion for it to be debated in Parliament, possibly on Wednesday or Thursday that week.
“MPs will discuss the RCI report, and the prime minister himself has commented on what has been described as a betrayal.
“Reading the RCI report, it is clear that betrayal occurred,” Fahmi said during a press conference following the cabinet meeting in Putrajaya today.
Fahmi FadzilThe report was officially declassified in Parliament on Dec 5.
Criminal investigation recommended
The RCI report recommended a criminal investigation against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, accusing him of misleading the cabinet in 2018 to withdraw Malaysia’s appeal for a review of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision that awarded Batu Puteh sovereignty to Singapore.
According to the report, Mahathir unilaterally decided to halt the review without cabinet approval and subsequently briefed them on his reasons.
The commission argued that Malaysia had a viable case to overturn the ICJ’s ruling if the government had presented new evidence during the Application for Revision and Request for Interpretation process at the ICJ.
The Pakatan Harapan government, led by Mahathir, withdrew the review application in May 2018, just two weeks before hearings were scheduled to commence on June 11, 2018.
In February, Azalina clarified that the RCI’s objective was to seek solutions and improvements regarding issues of national sovereignty, not to assign blame.
She also stated that Malaysians, particularly those in Johor, deserved an explanation for the decision to withdraw the ICJ review.
The report was submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar on June 18 this year.
