Parents To Claim Body Of Malaysian Student Murdered In Taiwan

Taiwan police have detained a suspect who confessed to strangling the 24-year-old student and dumping the body in the mountains of Kaohsiung.KUALA LUMPUR: Taiwanese authorities have confirmed the identity of the Malaysian student found dead in Alian District, Kaohsiung, on Oct 29 as a third-year student at Chang Jung Christian University in Tainan City.
She was first reported missing on Oct 28.
In a statement today, the foreign affairs ministry said it was working closely with the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei to provide the necessary consular assistance to the parents of the victim, who were scheduled to arrive in Taipei today.
“The ministry extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family for their loss.
“All Malaysian students in Taiwan are advised to be alert, vigilant and cautious of their personal safety.
“Malaysian students and citizens in Taiwan are also advised to register with the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei,” it said.
Yesterday, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen tendered her apology to the family of the student.
“The president expressed her deepest apologies to the family of the student and the people of Malaysia,” according to presidential office spokesman Xavier Chang.
Bernama reported yesterday that a man was arrested in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, late on Thursday in connection with the discovery of the body.
The suspect confessed to strangling the 24-year-old student to death and dumping the body in the mountains of Kaohsiung, CNA quoted the Tainan police as saying.
Investigators found CCTV footage that showed the victim walking along a road in Gueiren District, close to a railway overpass, at around 8pm on Wednesday, before disappearing from sight.
In the same area, police also zeroed in on a private car that was found to contain bloodstains and a bag of female underwear, the precinct said.
According to their initial investigation, police said it appeared that the victim did not know the suspect, who is believed to have been preying on women walking alone on the lonely road near the railway overpass in Tainan. - FMT
