Pannir Selvam Executed In Singapore Following Legal Process Says Home Ministry
KUALA LUMPUR: Pannir Selvam Pranthaman (pic) was executed after undergoing the full legal process under Singaporean law, says the Home Ministry.
“Malaysia’s foreign policy respects the independence and sovereignty of every territory through its policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and the principle of the rule of law,” it said in a parliamentary written reply dated Oct 30.
The ministry was responding to a question from Ramkarpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor) regarding the case of Pannir Selvam Pranthaman, who was executed in Singapore while investigations into the syndicate that recruited him were still ongoing.
The Home Ministry said the Malaysian government, especially through the police, cooperates with authorities of other nations, including Singapore, in addressing cross-border drug trafficking cases.
“In the case of the late Pannir Selvam, he was convicted of drug trafficking in Singapore and sentenced to death after undergoing the full legal process and being tried in accordance with Singapore’s laws,” it said.
“Earlier this year, the late Pannir Selvam, who had been scheduled to face execution, was granted a stay following efforts and discussions held with his counterpart, the Minister for Home Affairs of Singapore,” it added.
The ministry said Singapore had once again granted approval to the Malaysian police to interview and record a statement from the late Pannir Selvam on Sept 27, 2025.
“During both periods, the Malaysian police examined every aspect of the investigation related to the alleged drug syndicate, including inquiries into the individuals named by Pannir Selvam’s family,” it said.
“The investigation concluded that there were no reasonable grounds for the Malaysian police to express support for the subject. Furthermore, information regarding these individuals was only provided to the police in 2018 by the subject’s sister through a police report, almost four years after the late Pannir Selvam had been arrested in Singapore in 2014,” it added.
The ministry said that should a Malaysian citizen violate the laws of a foreign country, they would be subjected to the due legal process under that country’s judicial system.
It also reminded Malaysian citizens to always comply with the laws of the countries they visit.
The 38-year-old Malaysian was executed on Oct 8, for smuggling drugs into the island republic in 2014.
He was convicted by the High Court on May 2, 2017 for importing not less than 51.84g of diamorphine into Singapore in 2014 and was sentenced to the mandatory death penalty.
He was initially scheduled for execution in February but received a stay of execution due to pending legal matters.
Malaysian police had interviewed Pannir on Sept 27 when lawyers said he provided information about the people who had handed him the drugs.
It raised hopes that his execution would be postponed again for a new investigation. - Star
