Pamela Ling Claimed Macc Was Pressuring Her Says Lawyer

Datin Seri Pamela Ling has been missing for close to a month. FILE PICKUALA LUMPUR: Datin Seri Pamela Ling, who has been missing for close to a month, had filed a judicial review just two days before her disappearance on April 7.
Her lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said Ling, in her application, had alleged that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had, among others, misused its powers under the MACC Act and the Anti-Money Laundering Act to exert pressure on her.
"Ling claimed MACC had exerted pressure on her to resolve a private dispute with her estranged husband, rather than for legitimate investigative purposes.
"The MACC was alleged to have arrested and remanded Ling without a proper legal basis and in breach of due process and had subjected her to a travel restriction without explanation, despite full compliance with MACC requirements," said Sangeet, who is acting for Ling's family, in a statement today.
Sangeet said available records showed that the MACC had subjected Ling to a sustained and systematic campaign of pressure over several months.
"She had attended, at the MACC on no fewer than nine occasions, cooperated fully, and was never charged with any offence.
"Despite this, she remained under an unexplained travel ban since at least October 2024, with an order to report to MACC monthly.
"She was summoned yet again on April 9 (one day before her scheduled reporting date) — her ninth attendance — to provide further statements.
"She disappeared on that very day upon arriving near the MACC's Putrajaya office.
"This pattern of conduct by MACC was far from ordinary and inconsistent with the treatment expected toward a witness assisting in investigations," said Sangeet.
Sangeet said it was appalling that MACC had suddenly been silent about Ling's disappearance.
She questioned how it is that an agency so invested in Ling's whereabouts has now chosen to say nothing about her disappearance.
"No public statement has been issued on the circumstances of her last scheduled attendance.
"No clarification has been offered as to whether MACC flagged any risk to her safety despite knowing that she was involved in sensitive financial and matrimonial disputes spanning locally and in Singapore, involving alleged fraudulent transfers of company shares, alongside a suit for the division of a substantial pool of matrimonial assets.
"To date, MACC has not confirmed whether it has shared all relevant information with the police, what occurred on the day of the incident in or just outside MACC grounds, including information about security guards on duty at the material time or whether a missing person report was ever lodged by the MACC itself," she said.
Although reported missing since early April, news of Ling's disappearance only came to light last week.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa had said statements had been recorded from 12 individuals, including MACC officers.
He said that no ransom demand had been received and that there were no new leads in the case.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had denied that the commission had not accorded adequate protection to Ling before her disappearance.
He had said it was unfair to blame the MACC as the incident was beyond their control and occured on a public road and not within the MACC compound.
He also added that the MACC had left the matter to the police to investigate. - NST
