Only Myborderpass To Be Used For Faster Immigration Clearance Between Johor And Singapore
JOHOR BARU: Around 300,000 Malaysian bus passengers and motorcycle users will soon only need to use the MyBorderPass app for faster immigration clearance at the two land checkpoints with Singapore.
This move follows the government’s pick of a single app after putting three apps – MyBorderPass, MyRentas and MyTrip – on trial.
Since June, bus passengers and motorcyclists passing through the Sultan Abu Bakar Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex (KSAB) at the Second Link have been using the MyTrip app.
Bus passengers at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar CIQ in Johor Baru (BSI) used MyRentas while motorcyclists used MyBorderPass, which supports QR code and facial recognition.
It is learnt that as of midnight yesterday, the two bus lanes at BSI have been integrated with MyBorderPass, which will eventually feature facial recognition.
According to a Home Ministry official, there are six motorcycle lanes, three entering and three exiting, at BSI that use MyBorderPass.
It is expected that MyTrip will be phased out at KSAB, with plans to replace it with MyBorderPass in the coming days.
A visit by The Star to BSI yesterday revealed that bus passengers are no longer using MyRentas and have been instructed to use MyBorderPass instead. Personnel are available to assist passengers in navigating the system.
State works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh welcomed the transition to a single app, calling it a convenience for the public and less confusing, as Malaysians will no longer need to use multiple apps at the two checkpoints.“We have seen how effective the facial recognition system has been at the motorcycle lanes in BSI. We hope this technology will help clear more bus passengers without issues.
“However, if there is a problem, passengers can use their QR code or go to the manual counter,” he said in an interview.
Mohamad Fazli emphasised that the “end game” for the state government, particularly Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, is to ensure faster and smoother clearance at the two land checkpoints using a single app.
“We want a reliable and effective system,” he said, adding that they are hoping for federal funding to expand the QR code and AI facial recognition technology to all bus and motorcycle lanes at both CIQs.
Regarding the QR code system for cars and lorries, Mohamad Fazli said it is still in the proof-of-concept stage as it involves multiple passengers in a single vehicle.
“Sometimes a car or lorry may have both Malaysians and foreigners, so we need to ensure the system can capture all these details,” he said.
Eventually, the state aims to expand QR code and facial recognition facilities to all foreign travellers, similar to autogates.
Mohamad Fazli also said the state government aims to implement a system that facilitates smoother movement of people, especially with the upcoming establishment of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.
Since June, the three apps have been trialled at both checkpoints to assess their feasibility, with the trial period concluding on Nov 30.
Frequent traveller Subariah Mat Ali, 54, expressed hope that the single app would reduce confusion for Malaysians using the two checkpoints.
“I have all three apps on my phone, as sometimes my bus driver uses different checkpoints depending on traffic. Sometimes, I also follow my colleague on her motorcycle,” she said.
Subariah gave a positive review of the government’s initiative to use the QR code system, saying that it only takes three seconds for the system to detect and clear her.
Another traveller, P. Suppiah, 34, hopes QR code and facial recognition will be extended to all lanes, as congestion still occurs during peak hours.
“Everyone seems to like to scan their face, causing long lines during peak hours,” he said, urging the government to ensure the vendor maintains and upgrades the equipment throughout the contract period.
Meanwhile, Singapore has also begun trialling QR code implementation for travellers using buses to clear the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints, starting on Nov 23 and Nov 28, respectively. - Star
