Online Uproar As Young Man Dies In Accident On The Way To Pay Bribe To Police In Baling Kedah
IT IS often claimed that corruption is endemic in the country but citizens feel helpless to stem the tide.
The latest incident involves a tragic death in Baling, Kedah where a young man was killed in an accident while on the way to pay a bribe to the cops.
It was alleged in a police report filed by the deceased’s 74-year-old mother on Sept 20 that her son had apparently been stopped by police who then took away his mobile phone as “ransom”.
It is claimed that they demanded RM200 for its return and the victim was on his way to pay up when he met his untimely demise.

This incident was shared by current affairs observer FreeMalaysian (@FreeMsian) on X. The post has already generated 695.9K views at time of publication with many commenters expressing outrage at what is perceived as widespread corruption within the police force.
One commenter surmised that the accident occurred because the deceased was perhaps “nervous”.

Recent alleged wrongdoings by cops including hit-and-run case were also highlighted as a police force that was running by its own rules.

A few asked just under what law were the police acting under by taking away the mobile phone?

Some commenters just could not hide their disgust that this apparent attempt to extort RM200 has led to a tragic death.

Such rampant corruption and abuse of power seem to be of little surprise to many with a few contending that this is what happens when law enforcement personnel are recruited from dubious sources, ie “those with Mat Rempit genes”.

Some expressed a lack of confidence in the justice system with cases such as this, citing the usual “no case to answer” or “no further action (MFA)” as the usual outcomes.

Many used this incident to express their lack of confidence in a police force that is not just corrupt but hell bent on abusing its powers to oppress ordinary folk.

It was asked just when will the local police be forced to wear body cameras as this will definitely reduce incidences of graft and abuse of power.

One lamented that the rakyat could even get rid of politicians accused of wrongdoings through the ballot box but are powerless against civil services. “The most we can do is grumble on social media” was the resigned conclusion.

The sense of helplessness was evident in various comments, highlighting that public opinion of the police force was at an all-time low.
One concerned citizen called for tougher reforms to defeat rampant corruption while another lamented the ineffectiveness of enforcement bodies to investigate such wrongdoings for even the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is struggling to combat graft.

How many more such cases need to happen before some form of decisive action is taken? Will there ever be the political will to fix this deep-rooted problem?
At the moment, public sentiment would indicate there isn’t the belief that things will ever change. – Focus Malaysia
