Online Sale Of Forested Land Not Gazetted As Permanent Reserve S Gor Forestry

The Selangor Forestry Department said the 264ha of forested land identified by the Rimba Disclosure Project as being sold on the internet are not gazetted as part of permanent forest reserves.
"Based on checks by the department, it was found that the locations for sale were not gazetted as permanent forest reserve under the National Forestry Act (Adoption) Enactment 1985," said Selangor Forestry Department director Ahmad Fadzil Abdul Majid.
The Rimba Disclosure Project had identified a total of 43,539ha of forested land for sale on the internet. 
However, it did not say that the forested land identified in Selangor totalling 264 acres were within permanent forest reserves.

The Selangor land in question involved two plots, one involving 192ha in Pulau Indah which it said was mangrove forest based on Google maps satellite imagery.
The other involved 72ha of land in Puncak Alam which it said according to Google maps showed it was still a forested area.
However, it did identify land for sale outside of Selangor which it claimed were within a permanent forest reserve, particularly in Kelantan.
Exercise caution
Fadzil urged the public to exercise caution when dealing with online advertisements claiming the sale of permanent forest reserve land.
"The Selangor Forestry Department would like to inform that the size of permanent forest reserves in Selangor has been increased to 250,250.29ha in 2021.
"The success is due to the Selangor government's strong and continuous commitment through a number of initiatives since 2010.
"Among them include the enforcement of a moratorium on logging in permanent forest reserves for 25 years and amending the National Forestry Act (Adoption) Enactment 1985 to require a public inquiry for any degazettement of permanent forest reserves," he said.
Fadzil added that any degazettement of a permanent forest reserve must also be substituted with a new area of equal size.
