Nurul Izzah was defeated by Perikatan Nasional candidate Fawwaz Mat Jan (PN-PAS) with a majority of 5,272 votes.
After the election, Fawwaz, who is Penang PAS Youth chief, said he hoped that he could fulfil his promises to the people of Permatang Pauh in the next five years.
“I would like to apologise if I have made any mistake during the campaigning and I intend to unite Permatang Pauh. We are all brothers and sisters,” he told reporters while accompanied by Penang PAS commissioner Fauzi Yusoff.
The seat was first won by Anwar in April 1982 on the Barisan Nasional ticket when he defeated Zabidi Ali of PAS with a 14,352-vote majority.
Anwar, who was born in Cherok Tok Kun, Bukit Mertajam, retained the seat until he was imprisoned in April 1999. His wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, proceeded to win the seat in November that year.
Wan Azizah retained the seat in two elections, as Anwar was banned from participating in politics for five years after being released in 2004.
In July 2008, she vacated the seat to make way for Anwar to contest the by-election, which he won with a majority of 15,671 votes defeating BN candidate Arif Shah Omar Shah.
He retained the seat in 2013, defeating Mazlan Ismail (BN) and Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin (Independent) by a 11,721-vote majority.
However, Anwar was sentenced to five years in prison for sodomy in 2015. He was disqualified from being the MP for Permatang Pauh and in the subsequent by-election in May 2015, Wan Azizah retained the seat, defeating Suhaimi Sabudin (BN) with a majority of 8,841 votes.
In 2018, Nurul Izzah, who had been MP for Lembah Pantai, defended the Permatang Pauh seat, defeating Zaidi Mohd Said with a majority of 15,668 votes. - FMT
