Not Radzi S Syllabus Minister Says Learning Loss Long Standing Issue
The syllabuses used in primary and secondary schools have been implemented since 2017 and are not a “Radzi Jidin syllabus”, said the education minister.
Developing a new learning syllabus, Mohd Radzi Md Jidin said, would take time and it is an elaborate process before it can be implemented in schools.
He explained that pupils who entered Year One in 2017 would be using the existing syllabus until they complete Year Six in 2023, while secondary school students had concluded their curriculum last year.
“The syllabus today has been in use since 2017. This is not Radzi Jidin’s syllabus,” he told reporters after officiating the ‘Reading Progress Initiative’ in government schools, at a hotel in Shah Alam today.
“The syllabus cannot be changed every year as it would burden the teachers and pupils for them to get accustomed to the new syllabus.
“Our approach is to review the syllabus once its cycle has been completed,” Radzi added.
Finding solutions
This comes after primary school teacher Mohd Fadli Salleh criticised the ministry for a difficult mathematics syllabus, having too many pupils in a class and too many subjects to study as well as pupils having to carry heavy school bags.
Responding to Fadli’s concerns, Radzi said learning loss, especially the ability to read, among primary school students has been a long-standing issue.
He stressed that the ministry has given special attention to the issue and has been listening to stakeholders as well as looking into the pressing matter to find suitable solutions.
Senior Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin“There is room for improvement and for us to change the approach. But this is not a ‘current’ issue, it has been around for a long time.”
Noting that the 15th general election is right around the corner, he said it would be inappropriate for the education system to be “politicised”.
“Education must be kept far away from politics,” he added. - Mkini
