No Talks On New Senate President Yet Says Abang Jo
Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said discussions on the next Senate president will be held with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.MIRI: Sarawak will wait until after the late senator Mutang Tagal’s funeral before holding discussions on the appointment of the next Senate president, says premier Abang Johari Openg.
Abang Johari said the discussions will be held with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“We will first pay our last respects to the late senator, and then we will discuss the position,” he said when met by reporters after paying his last respects to Mutang here today.
The former Bukit Mas MP (1982-1990) was appointed as the 20th president of the Dewan Negara on Feb 19, replacing Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar who relinquished the post following his appointment as the Sarawak governor.
He died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur at 11.46am on Friday. He was 69.
“Unfortunately, he served for a relatively short period. He was suffering from heart disease,” Abang Johari said.
Mutang was admitted to IJN immediately after arriving from Azerbaijan on May 6. He was there from April 29 for a work trip which had to be cut short after he fell ill.
Abang Johari said Mutang was a prominent Sarawakian figure who contributed significantly to the region and Malaysia, as well as to strengthening Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
“On behalf of the Sarawak government and our state Cabinet colleagues, we offer our condolences to the late Mutang’s family and hope they remain patient during this difficult time.” - FMT
