No Need To Split Religious Affairs Portfolio Says Bn Youth

KOTA KINABALU: There is no need to split the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) into two - one for Islamic affairs and another for non-Islamic, says a Barisan Nasional youth exco member.
Datuk Seri Dr Anil Sandhu (pic) disagreed with the proposal by Raub MP YB Chow Yu Hui to split the portfolio, saying that the current system was able to effectively manage Islamic affairs without impacting the religious freedom of non-Muslims.
Anil said the proposal is unnecessary and sensitive, as Islam is the official religion of Malaysia under the Federal Constitution.
“Religious freedom in Malaysia has long been guaranteed without discrimination. Some state governments already have a portfolio for non-Islamic affairs, which functions within their respective jurisdictions. The federal administration of Islamic affairs holds a special status, and this proposal could create unnecessary confusion,” he said.
During a debate on the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Feb 12), Chow proposed splitting the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) portfolio, arguing that it would ensure fair religious governance, strengthen national unity, and prevent any group from being sidelined.
Anil warned that splitting the ministry could lead to administrative complications and social instability. Instead, he urged for unity to be strengthened through interfaith dialogue rather than separating ministerial portfolios, which could cause misunderstandings in religious management.
“The current minister’s role is already inclusive, ensuring all communities can practice their religions harmoniously. Any changes to the ministry’s structure must be carefully studied to avoid disrupting the harmony we have long enjoyed,” he added.
Anil called on all parties to respect Malaysia’s religious sensitivities and avoid raising issues that could divide society. He urged Malaysians to focus on strengthening unity and mutual respect. - Star
