Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar, the younger brother of former Pahang Ruler Sultan Ahmad Shah, also hoped for the new head of government to have a strong understanding of the economy and command the respect of civil servants.
He said only a national leader with such traits would be capable of carrying out reforms for Malaysia.
“I believe that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Malay Rulers will appoint someone who is credible and understands the current scenario faced by the country,” the former Jerantut MP said in a statement.
Tengku Azlan, better known as Ku Lan, was until last week the head of Bersatu’s Temerloh division.
He announced his departure from the party to rejoin Umno on Aug 9. He served as Jerantut MP for three terms from 1999 to 2012.
The King, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, is expected to appoint a new prime minister after meeting with his fellow Rulers on Friday.
On Monday, Muhyiddin Yassin and his Cabinet tendered their resignations to the King after losing majority support.
Istana Negara has said Muhyiddin will serve as caretaker prime minister until his successor is appointed.
Several political party leaders had an audience with the King yesterday to state their views on forming a new government. All MPs were also required to submit statutory declarations of their support for a ninth prime minister candidate by 4pm today. - FMT
