The city council, in a statement, confirmed that Noorazam started his duties as the 13th mayor of Johor Bahru.
"Noorazam was welcomed at Menara MBJB this morning (Sunday) by the chief whip of city councillors, the council's secretary and vice-secretary and all heads of department.
"MBJB welcomes and wishes the new mayor all the best as he starts his duties," the statement said.
Last Friday, a picture of Noorazam receiving a letter from Johor state secretary Datuk Azmi Rohani was circulating on social media.
Noorazam's position in KPRJ will be replaced by PIJ Holdings managing director Datuk Ramlee A. Rahman.
Previously, a mayor from a local council in Johor was remanded to facilitate investigations into a bribery case.
The 60-year-old senior government official was alleged to have received bribes from contractors in exchange for approvals for projects implemented during his tenure as the mayor.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Johor also arrested a government retiree who acted as a middleman to obtain bribes from contractors for the mayor in return for approving works carried out by the contractors for projects issued in 2020 and 2021.
The case is investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which provides a fine of five times the amount or value of the gratification, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment for up to 20 years, upon conviction. - NST
