Nazri Pm Decides On Cabinet Members Not Umno President
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi cannot decide on who should be in the cabinet if BN wins the election, said Nazri Abdul Aziz.
“In the past, all our (Umno) previous prime ministers were Umno presidents… But this is different…
“And he (Zahid) can’t make the MPs sign all the rights (to decide on ministers) over to him or even sign an agreement with the future prime minister to give him the right to appoint who he thinks should be a minister.
“That is the right of the prime minister, not the president. This we have to understand. Better know the law, he doesn’t know the law,” he told Malaysiakini.
The incumbent Padang Rengas MP, who has decided not to participate in this general election, was commenting on claims that BN candidates were made to sign a letter of undertaking.
However, Nazri (above) stopped short of confirming if there was such a document.
Previously, it was reported that the alleged document required candidates to empower Zahid to decide on cabinet positions.
BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during his campaign in Bagan DatukA purported copy of the letter circulated on social media, the contents of which stated that the candidates must support Zahid to be the next prime minister if BN wins and to allow Umno to explore forming alliances with other parties.
Umno has dismissed this document as fake.
Caretaker premier Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also Umno vice-president, has repeated twice that he is the BN prime minister candidate, but this has failed to silence the rumour mills.
Ismail Sabri had become prime minister in August last year after Umno engineered his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin’s ouster, 17 months after backing the latter in toppling the Pakatan Harapan government.
Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional coalition, which also comprises PAS, is singing the same tune as his predecessor Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who spearheads Gerakan Tanah Air, that Zahid has formed a pact with Harapan leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Both Zahid and Anwar have dismissed this.
PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, on the other hand, said the grassroots would rather be in the opposition than see the party’s founding principles being sacrificed. - Mkini
