Despite claims that PKR top leaders Anwar Ibrahim and Rafizi Ramli are at odds after giving “contradictory figures” in their expectations for the election, its party president said that is not the case.
Anwar refuted claims by BN’s treasurer-general Hishammuddin Hussein that the duo are not on the same page regarding winnable constituencies.
The Tambun candidate stressed that there are no misunderstandings between him and Rafizi (above, left) nor were there any infighting among the party’s top brass.
“Hishammuddin makes it seem like both of us are fighting. Does he think this is Umno? We are not like them,” Anwar (above, right) told reporters after meeting with Tambun pomelo growers in Hulu Kinta, Perak, today.
“Umno hasn’t even decided on its prime minister candidate. It first started with Ismail (Sabri Yaakob), (Ahmad) Zahid (Hamidi), and now it involves three people with Khairy (Jamaluddin) joining the fight.
“He (Khairy) announced himself for the prime ministerial post.”
Previously, caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri said he is optimistic that Umno, if it emerges victorious in the general election, will keep him in the top government position.
Zahid was also reported as saying that Ismail Sabri remains BN’s poster boy and candidate for the prime ministerial post.
Zahid, who is the BN chairperson, also stressed that the coalition’s stance on the matter would not change.
Khairy yesterday pledged that the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency – which he is contesting – will get a prime minister and Umno president one day if he wins this general election.
BN’s candidate for Sungai Buloh Khairy JamaluddinHowever, the caretaker health minister stressed that he would not pursue his ambitions right after the current national polls as Ismail Sabri is BN’s prime minister pick.
Motivating candidates to work hard
Meanwhile, Anwar explained Rafizi’s statement about Pakatan Harapan’s aim to win 80 federal seats, as opposed to his prediction of winning 100 seats.
He said those statements were for the coalition to push its machinery and candidates to work hard in order to win enough seats for a simple parliamentary majority.
“Rafizi made the statement based on his survey and we need to take that into account.
“He said 80 to 100 seats. He doesn’t want people to be complacent. So we start with a very good base, and we go high.
“In matters pertaining to the strategy, we are in it together – to push the agenda so that the people are not over-confident.”
Anwar also commented on the plight of local pomelo farmers - Tambun is famous for the fruit - and their longstanding land issues.
He said he will give priority to addressing their woes: “We will help them. Give us a chance and change the government. We can look into the matter.” - Mkini
