Name One Country That Reduced Inflation Via Ministers Pay Cuts Annuar
Jihad Against Inflation Task Force chairperson Annuar Musa has challenged those who mooted the idea of cutting cabinet members' salaries to name a country where such a move helped to bring down inflation.
Speaking to reporters in Parliament today, Annuar (above) implied that even when a pay cut is imposed on every minister, the cumulative amount would not be enough to make a difference.
"Can you name me one country that has managed to bring down inflation by (ministers) taking pay cuts?" he told the media conference.
The communication and multimedia minister said this when responding to a journalist's request for comments on whether he considers the idea to cut ministers' pay a good way to address inflation in Malaysia.
"Number two, let's say you cut RM10,000 from each minister, you multiply it by 36 (ministers in the cabinet). How much money can you get?
"Can you assure me that inflation is solved (by doing this)? Can it stop the increase in prices of goods?
"Come on, don't play politics," Annuar added.
The minister and several other members of the task force held the press conference to update the media about their meeting today, including the progress of the investigation into the smuggling of subsidised cooking oil to a neighbouring country.
Recently, former international trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz suggested that ministers take a pay cut to empathise with the rakyat who are struggling with the economy.
Similarly, a group called the Turun Movement also demanded that ministers' salaries be slashed. - Mkini
