Najib S Lawyers Grill Witness Over Mail Global Resources
NAJIB TRIAL | Former premier Najib Abdul Razak's defence team today grilled banker Norhayati Mohd Yunus over the transfer of RM35 million from Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd to a company named Mail Global Resources Sdn Bhd in 2015
Ihsan Perdana is the corporate social responsibility arm of SRC International Sdn Bhd. So far, the prosecution has established that Ihsan Perdana was funded by SRC International
The Kuala Lumpur High Court heard that the money was given by Ihsan Perdana in one day through seven separate cheques issued to Mail Global Resources, each amounting to RM5 million
All seven cheques were issued on Jan 13, 2015, according to submissions by defence counsel Farhan Read
Norhayati is the manager of the Affin Bank branch at The Curve Shopping Complex in Petaling Jaya which hosts Ihsan Perdana's account
At one point, Farhan began questioning Norhayati over whether she had been investigated prior or after the general election last year
The lawyer asked Norhayati how she was able to recollect the seven cheques issued to Mail Global Resources
She replied that she remembered the company due to an unrelated request for documents by Bank Negara prior to the 14th general election
The banker added that while checking the documents, she had noticed a large amount of money which had been transferred to Mail Global Resources
When pressed by Farhan on whether Bank Negara or MACC had asked her specific questions about Mail Global Resources, Norhayati said no
She also stated that the bank did not have any dealings with Mail Global Resources after the 14th general election
Farhan later asked about another cheque for RM53 million issued by Ihsan Perdana to Mail Global Resources, to which the witness replied she was not asked about this by the MACC
Meanwhile, Najib's lead counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah (above) said the defence's strategy was to determine whether some witnesses had been persuaded to change their testimony after the general election
"We are not surprised if some things are like that happened. That is why we kept on asking
"If some witnesses give drastically different statements (compared to) what we expect them to say, then there is a reason for concern," said Shafee. When asked on how the defence would prove this, Shafee claimed that there is a way to make the witnesses reveal their change in testimony through a cross-examination method
"There is a way. We cannot tell you now. There is a way. It is a method of cross-examination," he said. -Mkini
