Her water bag burst on Saturday morning last week, a fortnight before the baby was due.
Determined to deliver her baby at a private hospital in Johor Bahru, she and her husband Ong Teck San, immediately began the journey from Woodlands to the immigration checkpoint, according to the Straits Times newspaper.
Cheng said she had to summon all her energy to walk through the tunnels and pathways with Ong, to reach the checkpoint for immigration clearance.
“We were not thinking about other options, even though I was in some pain and discomfort. I thought about losing more amniotic fluid, which would affect the baby’s safety, but just kept going on,” she was quoted as saying.
Although there appeared to be “more people than usual” at the border checkpoint, she received help from the Singaporean border officers who cleared them in about 10 minutes. She was even provided a wheelchair.
“We were both really surprised. We didn’t think they would bring out a wheelchair and help push me, but it provided a lot of relief,” said Cheng.
At the Johor checkpoint later, she was held up because she was unable to present some documents. Eventually she arrived at the private hospital in Iskandar Puteri, after two and a half hours from the time they left their home.
Cheng experienced a smooth delivery and gave birth to a boy named Torrex, just after 4pm.
