Muda S Rejection Smacks Of Political Interference Says Anwar
MUDA’s pro tem vice-president Lim Wei Jiet showing the rejection letter from the home minister.PETALING JAYA: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said today the “bizarre” handling of youth party MUDA’s application for registration is the result of political interference.
MUDA’s appeal to be registered as a political party was denied a second time, with no reasons given, just before a judicial review hearing over the matter yesterday.
MUDA’s pro tem vice-president Lim Wei Jiet said the committee was informed by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) in an email that the home minister had rejected its appeal for registration.
In a statement today, Anwar urged home minister Hamzah Zainudin to review MUDA’s registration “fairly and objectively” in line with the Societies Act 1966.
He said failure to grant MUDA due process in its application was “another example of the assault on Malaysia’s democracy by a government which has demonstrated an appetite to violate all constitutional norms” to stay in power.
Earlier this year, RoS rejected MUDA’s application for registration but did not provide specific reasons.
The party then filed its appeal to the home minister in February, but Hamzah did not respond until yesterday.
The rejection came just before the Kuala Lumpur High Court was to hear a suit by the party, led by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, to compel the ministry to make a decision on its application.
The party said it will be challenging the home minister’s decision in court. - FMT
