Muafakat Nasional Ngo Moots Special Convention On Constitutional Guarantees

The proposal was raised following a special MN supreme council meeting, chaired by its deputy president, Noh Omar.
In a statement, Noh said the meeting discussed concerns over growing political fragmentation among the indigenous (Pribumi) and Muslim communities.
“As the core of the nation, the Pribumi must lead, and this leadership must start with unity across political affiliations,” he said.
“MN, therefore, urges all Pribumi-based political leaders to rebuild consensus among themselves, so that they remain a dominant force capable of leading the country fairly, based on the spirit of unity and upholding the Federal Constitution.”
However, Noh said unity efforts must take into account Malaysia’s multiracial landscape and uphold the principles enshrined in the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara.
“We support the idea of a special convention that gives focus to the basic points of the Federal Constitution, especially matters involving the position of Islam, the Malay Rulers, the special rights of Malays and Bumiputeras, Bahasa Melayu, and the rights of all races,” he said.
Noh said MN would continue working towards forming a “strong, cohesive and stable” alliance by bringing together Pribumi political parties, NGOs and civil society groups.
The NGO also reiterated its support for the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), saying it was committed to upholding all its provisions. - FMT
