Mp Calls For Openness About Negotiations With Jho Low
The Attorney-General’s Chambers had been in negotiations with representatives of Jho Low, the Attorney-General said today.PETALING JAYA: Klang MP Charles Santiago has taken Attorney-General (AG) Idrus Harun to task, demanding transparency over government negotiations with fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low.
Idrus must provide more details of the negotiations, than just confirm that such negotiations had taken place and that Jho Low’s offers to settle had been rejected.
Jho Low, who is wanted in connection with the 1MDB corruption scandal, is reported to have offered to make payment of RM1.5 billion to have the case settled.
Idrus confirmed today that his department had held discussions with Jho Low’s representatives and that the offer had been rejected.
However, Santiago said “the AG must be transparent about the entire negotiation process, by providing such details as the chronology of events, the persons involved, the offer made, and the cause of such rejection of Jho Low’s offer.
He told FMT that a special investigation was warranted, and that if any criminal element was involved, then the police must get involved.
Earlier today, former attorney-general Apandi Ali said he had been contacted by a Washington legal firm representing Jho Low to arrange meetings with the Attorney-General’s Chambers, which were held in May.
Apandi said the meetings were to discuss the repatriation of monies allegedly siphoned by Jho Low from 1MDB. However, he said the negotiations fell through for reasons unknown to him.
