Mp Calls For Debate On Chronic Corruption Among Law Enforcement Officers
Following a revelation that corruption among frontline law enforcement officers has become ‘increasingly chronic and worrying’, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng wants the Dewan Rakyat to discuss if the agencies should be under the direct purview of ParliamentPETALING JAYA: Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) has filed a motion for a senior Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) official’s criticism of corruption among law enforcement officers to be debated in the Dewan Rakyat.
On Monday, MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said the level of corruption among law enforcement officers working on the frontline was seen as “increasingly chronic and worrying”, adding that such incidents were increasing.
In his motion, Lim said corrupt law enforcement officers were a security risk to the country and called on the lower house to take immediate steps to address the issue.
“The Dewan Rakyat should debate this important issue and find short and long-term solutions to this problem,” he said.
“The Dewan Rakyat should also discuss if law enforcement agencies should be under the direct purview of Parliament.
“This has to be done immediately as these (corrupt law enforcement officers) are no longer isolated cases. If corruption among law enforcement officers does not end, it will affect the economy through a lack of investor confidence.”
The DAP MP added that corrupt law enforcement officers also reflected poorly on the government.
The motion, filed yesterday under Rule 18(1) of the Standing Orders, was received by the office of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul today. - FMT
