Minister 1 Utama Mall To Resume Operations Tomorrow
Covid-19 | The 1 Utama shopping mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor has been cleared to reopen its doors tomorrow, on the seventh day since it was served with a shutdown order to facilitate Covid-19 screenings and thorough disinfection of its premise.
Senior Minister (Security) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the decision was made based on advice from the Health Ministry, taking into account control and prevention measures by the mall's management since the detection of its initial four positive cases which led to its closure on Oct 11.
"As of Oct 15, 2020, a total of 6,000 people including workers, tenants, and staff, as well as 110 visitors of 1 Utama shopping mall, have been screened.
"Those found to be positive have been sent to the hospital for treatment, contacts with no symptoms ordered to serve 14-days quarantine, and those with symptoms were referred to the nearest health clinics," Ismail said today.
"With the control and prevention measures taken, the (ministers) meeting today has agreed to allow the 1 Utama shopping mall to resume operations on Oct 17," he said, adding that tenants will be allowed in today to prepare for reopening.
Meanwhile, the mall's management in a statement on Facebook reassured that all of its tenants, management staff, auxiliary police, and security personnel have been tested before being cleared for duty.
As of yesterday, the Utama cluster, named after the 1 Utama shopping mall, was the largest contributor to the number of Covid-19 cases in the state, according to the Health Ministry.
Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 150 new cases in Selangor reported as of noon yesterday, 105 were attributed to the Utama cluster alone.
The index case has been identified as a foreign security guard, 28, who reported symptoms on Sept 22 but was only diagnosed on Oct 8.
So far, there were 132 positive Covid-19 cases attributed to this cluster.
The vast majority of its cases involved security guards (87) followed by cleaners (18) all of whom work at the mall.
Others infected were 16 staff members of various outlets in the mall, six patrons, and five of their family members.
So far, this cluster has involved 107 foreigners and 25 Malaysian citizens. - Mkini
