PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is evaluating U Mobile Sdn Bhd’s detailed business plan for the rollout of the nation’s second 5G network.
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said he expected a notice of award to be issued to U Mobile within the month.
“This would allow U Mobile to commence the development of the second 5G network, subject to the approval of the detailed business plan it submitted,” he said in a written Dewan Rakyat reply.
Fahmi said the telco also needed to settle several obligations under the shareholder agreement which U Mobile and other mobile network providers had signed with Digital Nasional Bhd before setting up the second 5G network.
FMT has been made to understand that the MCMC is also evaluating DNB’s detailed business plan.
He said the process to resolve these obligations, which he did not elaborate on, was expected to take about five months.
“However, U Mobile can carry out preliminary works on sites based on the detailed business plan, once approved by MCMC.”
U Mobile signed a memorandum of understanding with CIMB Bank Bhd last month to extend financing support for its upcoming 5G rollout.
Its chairman, Vincent Tan, said the company planned to roll out the network independently in the next 15 to 18 months, without collaborating with local partners.
Tan said he was instead eyeing a partnership with Chinese telco suppliers Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and ZTE Corp. - FMT
