Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.SUNGAI BULOH: Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said he will get an explanation from his vice-president, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who was reported as questioning reports about Beijing’s policies against Muslims, saying they could be “false news”
Mohamad, who is also defence minister, said he had yet to see the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department to get an explanation
“I haven’t received an exact statement from him yet
“I want to discuss with him first on the matter, if his statement is true or whether there is any misreporting (‘tambah sini dan sana’) in it,” he told reporters today after officiating the 54th Koperasi Tentera AGM here
“False news in China about Muslims being oppressed could trigger a wave of sympathy to the oppressed and affect relationships,” Mujahid was reported as saying in a speech he delivered at the Beijing Foreign Studies University yesterday
The remarks came in the wake of criticism of Mujahid’s use of the term “training centre” to refer to a controversial camp set up to “re-educate” Muslim dissidents in the restive Xinjiang province
His Facebook post immediately drew criticism from Amnesty International Malaysia and Facebook users, who said Mujahid was parroting Chinese propaganda in describing detention camps in Xinjiang as “training centres”
China has denied the existence of such camps but later said they were “vocational centres” to help “save” people from extremist influences
On another matter, Mohamad said he would investigate a picture of Amanah committee member seen getting school teachers to fill up the party’s membership form
The picture has gone viral on social media
On a proposal to raise salaries for army personnel just like low-level policemen, he agreed it was time to do so
