Marina Slams Pakatan Leaders For Only Focusing On Lgbt At Women S March
PETALING JAYA: Social activist Marina Mahathir (pic) has criticised Pakatan Harapan leaders Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan for their condemnation of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people during the Women's March on Saturday (March 9)
"I’m calling you out @wansaiful and @mujahidrawa! You are trying to distract from addressing very real women’s issues by focusing on only one of many demands at the #WomensMarch. Shame on you! #misogyny #youreadisgrace," Marina tweeted late Saturday (March 9) night
Previously, online news portal Malaysiakini reported that Dr Mujahid had criticised the Women's March, as it defended LGBT rights, adding that it was an abuse of democracy
He added that the government will never accept LGBT practices in the country.
Wan Saiful said the combination of the Women's March and the LGBT agenda was "disgusting".
He had said that fighting for the rights of women were respected and a noble action, which should be supported. However, he said, combining a noble agenda with the LGBT agenda was a provocation towards the county's stability, which should be rejected by all parties
Marina went on to accuse Dr Mujahid and Wan Saiful for misogyny for their criticism of the LGBT community
"Misogyny means hatred of women. I’m gonna call it for what it is," she said
Marina questioned whether they believed that women should be beaten up, endure sexual harassment, die during childbirth, or even get paid less than men
"I’m really beginning to believe that men really believe that women’s issues are trivial, and that’s why they will find any excuse to not respond to demands to address anything that truly affects women. It’s called misogyny!! #Kebencianterhadapperempuan (hatred towards women)" she said
She further questioned whether Dr Mujahid and Wan Saiful had said anything positive for International Women's Day
"Have they even wished us? And to think we women’s groups campaigned and voted for you!" she said
The Women's March drew criticism as it had also chanted slogans concerning LGBT issues as well as a few activists among their midst who flew LGBT rainbow flags
Among the demands listed down by the Women's March were the elimination of gender discrimination, an end to violence against women, the strengthening of women's rights, and a push for equal opportunities and wages.- Star
