Malaysians In Sudan Safe Despite Military Takeover Says Wisma Putra

(AFP pic)PETALING JAYA: All 42 Malaysians, including 27 students registered with the Malaysian embassy in Khartoum, Sudan are safe following reports of a military coup there, says the foreign ministry.
In a statement, the ministry said embassy officials were in close contact with Wisma Putra.
“The foreign ministry is closely monitoring developments in Sudan, following latest reports of a military takeover.
“The ministry will continue to undertake efforts to safeguard Malaysia’s interest in the country, including the Petronas Sudan Complex, which also houses the Malaysian embassy, United Nations agencies and other international organisations,” it said.
The government said it had conveyed Malaysia’s concerns pertaining to the safety of its citizens to the Sudanese charge d’affaires, who was summoned to Wisma Putra this afternoon.
“The ministry advises Malaysians requiring consular assistance in Sudan to contact the embassy in Khartoum or the ministry,” it said.
According to foreign reports, military forces arrested several members of Sudan’s civilian leadership early today as a prominent pro-democracy group called on Sudanese to take to the streets to resist any military coup.
Sources told Reuters that military forces had stormed the house of Sudan’s prime minister Abdalla Hamdok’s media adviser and arrested him.
There was no immediate comment from the military.
Last week, several Cabinet ministers took part in protests in several parts of Khartoum and other cities against the prospect of military rule. - FMT
