PETALING JAYA: Tourism Malaysia will intensify its tourism promotion efforts in the Asean region by focussing on business and border tourism.
Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general Lee Thai Hung said the move is aimed at ensuring Malaysia’s appeal as a major tourism destination among Asean tourists, which is in line with the country’s commitment to strengthening the regional tourism industry.
Lee said Tourism Malaysia will carry out more sales missions strategically in Malaysian border areas with Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei.
“This initiative aims to attract more regional tourists by introducing a range of promotions and competitive tourism offerings,” he told reporters after attending a Chinese New Year celebration at KLIA Terminal 1 and 2 today.
“In each sales mission, we will bring tourism industry players directly to tourists, including representatives from airlines, hotels, theme parks as well as homestay operators.
“This will open up more opportunities for collaboration and enhance Malaysia’s attractiveness as a major tourism destination in Asean.”
As Asean chair, Malaysia will host a variety of regional-level meetings and events this year, which are expected to attract more business visitors and tourists from Asean countries.
Lee said Malaysia’s chairmanship of the regional bloc will provide growth opportunities for the country’s tourism sector and further strengthen its role as a major regional tourism hub.
It was recently announced that in 2024, Malaysia recorded 38 million foreign tourist arrivals, far above its 27.3 million target.
This places Malaysia in the top spot among Asean countries for the most number of foreign arrivals, surpassing Thailand, which recorded 35.5 million international arrivals last year. - FMT
