(Bernama pic)ISKANDAR PUTERI: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia has great potential in the logistics and port sector, citing the performance of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) as an example.
“At the moment, PTP is indeed in the top 15 (globally), in addition to Port Klang, which is ranked 11th. This shows Malaysia’s potential (in this sector) is very good,” he told reporters here today.
He said he was proud of PTP’s success.
“This success is certainly the result of good planning, and solid and efficient management. This cannot be achieved without the commitment, discipline and spirit of all PTP staff,” he said.
In a separate statement, PTP chairman Che Khalib Noh said the port  not only had world-class facilities, but also serves as a reference point for the regional maritime industry in various other fields.
“PTP is the busiest container transshipment hub in Malaysia, covering a 1,900-acre terminal and a 1,600-acre free zone area. They provide services to major shipping companies and container operators, offering extensive domestic and international shipping,” he said.
Anwar said employers need to enhance safeguards for workers’ welfare in line with the profits gained.
He said the government is committed and always supportive of efforts to ensure not only the country’s economic development but also the well-being of the people.
The focus on workers’ welfare and well-being will make Malaysia’s development approach different from other countries, he said.
“Profitable companies must pay attention to providing reasonable wages and also the welfare of workers, such as aspects of education, health and housing.
“In driving the country’s economy, employers in Malaysia cannot neglect issues of benevolence and humanity, especially when it involves their staff,” he said. - FMT
