Boycott Group Says Mcdonald S Suit Has No Grounds
A group advocating boycotts of major international brands in response to the Israeli invasion of Gaza said McDonald’s Malaysia has no grounds to file a suit against them.
Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia chairperson Mohd Nazari Ismail said this was because the group did not directly campaign against the fast food chain giant, but merely endorsed a boycott initiated by the Malaysian public.
“If you look at the BDS Malaysia website, we’re not really campaigning for this boycott.
“It’s the Malaysian people who are boycotting it,” Nazari told reporters in Kuala Lumpur last night, when he joined the final day of the Siege for Palestine protest.
He said various people had reached out to BDS for support, their anger partly fueled by McDonald’s alleged sponsorship of meals for Israel’s armed forces.
He added that BDS Malaysia may hold a fundraising campaign to foot the legal costs associated with the RM6 million suit.

On Friday, BDS Malaysia said it was being sued by McDonald’s Malaysia for allegedly defaming the fast food giant.
Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd (GAR), the franchise owner of McDonald’s in Malaysia, was claiming the sum for revenue loss (RM3 million), compensation for employees who were laid off (RM1.5 million), and expiry of materials (RM1.5 million).
In its statement of claim, GAR said the company was 100 percent owned by Muslims and that 55 percent of its clientele were also Muslims. - Mkini
