Malay Ngo Blasts Bumi Status For Sarawak Chinese Idea Saying They Already Dominate The Economy

PERKASA Chief Information Officer, Irwan Fahmi Ideris, has criticised the proposal by Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng Wei Shien to grant Bumiputera status to the Chinese community in Sarawak.
He said minority communities, including the Chinese, already dominate the country’s economic wealth and education systems.
Irwan Fahmi Ideris argued that Sarawak’s existing racial and ethnic diversity is sufficient without extending Bumiputera status to the Chinese.
“The Julau MP needs to know that the economic wealth in this country has been successfully controlled by almost all minority communities, including the education system, which claims that the education of the Chinese people is the business of certain political parties that benefit a specific race or community?” he said.
He stated, “All this while, it seems that what people with the Bumiputera rights receive, other races can also enjoy, and now there’s a push to give Bumiputera status to the Chinese?”
Irwan further questioned, “What message is the Julau MP trying to convey? Are the rights of minorities in the Peninsula, including Sabah and Sarawak, not enough?”
PERKASA urged the Sarawak state government to dismiss Sng’s “unreasonable” request.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations President Richard Wee had previously rejected the proposal, arguing that existing policies are already acceptable to all races.
Julau MP Larry Sng, president of Parti Bangsa Malaysia, has proposed that the Sarawak government grant Bumiputera status to Sarawakian Chinese, citing their long history and contributions to the state.
He noted that many Sarawakian Chinese have ancestors who settled in the Bornean state around 150 years ago and have remained there.
Sng said that in view of Sarawak’s uniqueness in racial composition, religious diversity and autonomy in certain areas, by being a region and not a state, perhaps Sarawak’s leaders should consider granting Bumiputera status to Sarawakians of Chinese descent.
He further emphasised that the overwhelming majority of them were born in this country and had served, fought, sacrificed and contributed immensely to the economic wellbeing of the state.
Sng hopes this change will be legislated for the benefit of Sarawak and its people, mentioning a personal example of a staff member with mixed Chinese and Orang Ulu heritage who recently received Bumiputera status after 48 years. — Focus Malaysia
