Make Nov 18 A Public Holiday Nga Tells Govt
Declaring Nov 18 a public holiday will give voters ample time to return home to cast their ballots, says Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming.PETALING JAYA: Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming has suggested that the government declare Nov 18 a special public holiday so that voters can return to their hometowns and cast their ballots the following day.
“Our country has special holidays when football teams win (tournaments), why not for the general election, too, unless (the government thinks) it’s not worth having a holiday for all citizens for the general election?” he said at a DAP event last night, according to China Press.
The Perak DAP chief, who will be defending his Teluk Intan seat, hoped that the government will consider this suggestion to make it easier for Malaysians outside their home state to vote.
Malaysians will go to the polls for the 15th general election on Nov 19, with early voting set for Nov 15. Nominations will take place tomorrow.

Last week, the Young Lawyers Movement called on law firms to give lawyers and their staff a day off on Nov 18 to allow them to vote.
It urged the Malaysian Bar to push law firms to do so, as well as to request the judiciary to adjourn all cases on the same date.
It said the Bar had made such a request to the judiciary to give way to the “Walk for Judicial Independence” event it organised last June, adding that GE15 should be a good enough reason to make a similar request. - FMT
