Mahb Scrambles To Fix Klia Aerotrain Failures After Repeated Breakdowns

MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has demanded immediate corrective action from its aerotrain contractors following repeated breakdowns that have dented public confidence in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) transport system.
Preliminary assessments showed a worrying decline in system reliability, particularly involving the vehicle and power distribution systems.
Despite receiving data and assurances from contractors Alstom SA and the IJM–Pestech joint venture, MAHB said the information “did not instil sufficient confidence” in the aerotrain’s performance.
“Hence, we have made the decision to implement a comprehensive action plan. The plan will be led by Malaysia Airports’ project team, with the full involvement of contractors, project consultants and in collaboration with an independent technical assessor,” MAHB said in a statement.
“Malaysia Airports will continue to work closely with Agensi Pengangkutan Awam Darat (Land Public Transport Agency) and the Transport Ministry to address and resolve the issue,” it said, adding that the plan is in the midst of development with active engagement from “all relevant parties”.
The airport operator will also deploy full shuttle-bus services from 11pm to 5am and concurrent services during the day to ensure uninterrupted passenger movement.
Since resuming service in July 2025, the aerotrain has carried over 6.5 million passengers and made nearly 95,000 trips, but three breakdowns — on July 12, Sept 3, and Oct 15 — have plagued operations.
Last week, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, in Parliament, described the incidents as “shameful”, saying he was angered to see passengers forced to walk on the tracks with their luggage.
He said punitive measures will be taken against MAHB through the Land Public Transport Agency, stressing that even a government-linked company must guarantee reliable service and passenger safety. — Focus Malaysia
