Mahathir Quits Pejuang Continues Crusade Under Gta
Former Pejuang chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced his departure from the party along with several members today.
In a letter issued to Pejuang secretary-general Amiruddin Hamzah, Mahathir and 12 other members said they made the decision after the party cut ties with Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) coalition.
“Pejuang’s decision to sever ties with GTA has removed us from staying as members (of the party) when we continue the crusade with GTA,” they said in the letter.
“For us, the goal of GTA’s struggle is to unite Malay parties, non-governmental organisations and also people of principle and adhere to the struggle to defend religion, nation and the country.
“Based on this, we choose to continue this fight via GTA.”
Among members who quit the party include former deputy president Marzuki Yahya and former central executive council member Armin Baniaz Pahamin.
Mahathir founded Pejuang in 2020 after quitting Bersatu.
In August last year, Mahathir announced the establishment of GTA, during the height of speculations that the 15th general election (GE15) was going to be held soon.
On Dec 16, the 98-year-old veteran politician resigned as the Pejuang’s chairperson.
Pejuang, on Jan 14, called it quits with GTA.
Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir said the decision was made after taking into account the views of delegates in the party’s second general assembly following the party’s poor performance in GE15.
For the record, Mahathir suffered a crushing defeat in the Langkawi parliamentary seat during GE15 where he finished fourth in a five-cornered fight.
Mukhriz suffered a similar fate, losing in Jerlun where he had been the MP since 2018, after Perikatan Nasional won the seat during the Nov 19 polling day with a 20,456-vote majority.
