Mah Educates Teresa On Rules Barring Political Activities At Schools
Deputy Education Minister Mah Hang Soon has denied pressuring a school in Kuala Lumpur to not rent its hall to DAP for a fundraising dinner.
The MCA deputy president accused Seputeh MP Teresa Kok of twisting the truth on the matter.
Kok earlier today said she was informed that the Education Department and Mah's officer had contacted SJKC La Selle and pressured them against renting their hall to an opposition party.
Mah (above), however, said this had nothing to do with which side of the political spectrum DAP was on.
Instead, he said that schools under the Education Ministry's purview are not allowed to hold political events or sensitive religious events, subject to existing regulations.
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok“The Kuala Lumpur Education Department said its officer was informed that SJKC La Salle's hall is rented out for political activity.
“Therefore, the officer contacted the school authorities asking the latter to comply with the (ministry's) regulations.
“Neither ruling parties nor the opposition allowed to use government school buildings for political activities,” explained Mah in a press statement.
He added that as a senior politician, Kok should be aware that the government schools were subject to the law, hence she should not cause problems for the school authorities.
He also stressed that the school boards have never been stopped from renting out halls for weddings, forums, cultural events and so on to earn some income.
The Seputeh DAP had rented the school hall for a fundraising dinner next month, with 60 tables already sold.
Kok said the dinner will now be held at a different venue. - Mkini
