The Madani government humbly accepts the outcome of the Sungai Bakap by-election in Penang, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Taking to his social media platforms, Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairperson, said his administration is determined to intensify efforts to defend the fate of Malaysians and implement an agenda to raise the dignity of the people as well as the nation.
“The unity coalition respects and accepts the defeat of the Harapan candidate in the by-election yesterday.
“As the prime minister, I humbly accept the voice of the people in Sungai Bakap, with its by-election taking place when the country is going through an adjustment phase with waves of changes that are being actively implemented under the new direction of the Madani government.
“With precise policy and commitment, the unity coalition will continue to strengthen unity in the implementation of policies and initiatives that coincide with today’s reality and the new shift of the country that is underway,” he said today.
In the by-election, Perikatan Nasional retained its hold on the Sungai Bakap state seat after its candidate, Abidin Ismail, defeated Joohari Ariffin with a majority of 4,267 votes.
The Sungai Bakap by-election was held following the death of the incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, who was also Nibong Tebal PAS division chief, on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.
Despite the loss, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said the party will continue to strive for changes to ensure a better future for Penang and Malaysia.
She said the party views the results of the Sungai Bakap by-election as a sign of self-reflection to win the people’s trust.
In conceding Harapan’s defeat, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said his coalition lost control of the narrative to Perikatan Nasional in yesterday’s polls.
Chow said Harapan’s defeat and the decline in votes from the Chinese electorate were due to national issues. - Mkini
