MACC Seeks RM169 Million Forfeiture from Former PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court has scheduled a hearing for 1st October regarding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) request to seize over RM169 million in cash associated with former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
During a case management session on Tuesday, Judge Suzana Husin confirmed the hearing date. Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, representing Ismail Sabri, requested additional time for the defendant to respond to the forfeiture application.
In response, the court directed the defendant to submit an affidavit by 13th August, while the prosecution was instructed to provide an affidavit-in-reply by 3rd September.
The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutors Ifa Sirrhu Samsudin and Alis Izzati Azurin Rusdi.
On 7th July, the MACC submitted the application, with Ismail Sabri’s former political secretary, Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus, named as the first respondent alongside the former Prime Minister as the second respondent. The Commission is seeking a court order to confiscate the funds, which include substantial amounts in multiple currencies:
RM14,772,150 in Malaysian Ringgit
SGD6,132,350 in Singapore Dollars
USD1,461,400 in US Dollars
CHF3 million in Swiss Francs
EUR12,164,150 in Euros
JPY363,000,000 in Japanese Yen
GBP50,250 in British Pounds
NZD44,600 in New Zealand Dollars
AED34,750,000 in Emirati Dirhams
AUD352,850 in Australian Dollars
This application falls under Section 41(1) of the MACC Act 2009, as it was determined that the cash held by Mohammad Anuar is linked to Ismail Sabri and involves an offence under Section 36(2) of the same legislation.
Additionally, the MACC has requested any other suitable court orders relevant to the case.
As the situation develops, this high-profile case continues to capture public attention, highlighting ongoing efforts by Malaysian authorities to combat corruption at the highest levels of government.
