Macc Needs More Time To Probe Rm90m For Pas Says Pm
MACC might not have the complete information with regard to the allegation that 1MDB funds landed in PAS' official account, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad
He was responding to MACC's statement that the commission had not found any evidence to substantiate this allegation
"That is what MACC said, but it could be that MACC does not have the complete information. It takes time,” he told reporters in Klang this afternoon
“So I believe MACC needs more time to investigate in order to obtain more information regarding the matter,” he added
According to Mahathir, MACC also does not have the time to investigate the alleged numerous theft cases involving former premier Najib Abdul Razak's administration
"To date, there were many thefts by Najib which MACC does not have the time to investigate
"This does not mean that he (Najib) did not steal. It is just that it is still being scrutinised. Let us wait to see if it is true or not," he added
Najib (photo), who is facing a slew of money-laundering and graft charges relating to the 1MDB and SRC International scandals, has denied any wrongdoing or taking public funds for personal gain
Yesterday, MACC chief Mohd Shukri Abdull confirmed that the commission's investigation to date has not found that RM90 million purportedly originating from 1MDB had entered into PAS' account.Shukri's confirmation was consistent with comments from a source who previously told Malaysiakini that MACC was not able to establish any links to 1MDB
However, the source also said the funds scrutinised by MACC were limited to the account officially registered with PAS, and not those of specific party leaders
In a 2016 article, Sarawak Report claimed that PAS received some RM90 million from Umno in a bid by Najib to woo the Islamist party ahead of the 14th general election
However, the report did not mention if the alleged deposits were made to the PAS official's account or to specific leaders
The report also did not state that the alleged Umno funding originated from 1MDB
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had sued Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown in a London court over the allegation but retracted the suit earlier this month on grounds that it was too costly to sustain -Mkini
