Macc Launches Probe On Mitra S Missing Funds

The MACC decision to investigate comes amid allegations that Mitra funds had been mishandled during the Pakatan Harapan era.PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating allegations that the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) funds have been mishandled.
In a statement, the MACC said it has received a report on the matter today. The report was lodged by the NGO Pemuda Gen Z.
“A thorough investigation will be carried out, covering various angles including approval processes for grants and its recipients’ expenditure, be it associations, individuals or companies to determine if any corruption or abuse of power has occurred.”
The latest development comes amid allegations that Mitra funds had been mishandled during the Pakatan Harapan era.
Recently, former national unity minister P Waytha Moorthy had invited his successor Halimah Sadique to join him in lodging a report with MACC over these “mishandled funds”.
In a previous ministry statement, it was noted that all approvals for Mitra grants came under the purview of the minister and director-general. The director-general at the time, Magalingam Maniam, was appointed by Waytha Moorthy and served until June 30 this year.
Waytha denied that approval of grants from Mitra had been in his purview as unity minister or with the Mitra director-general.
He said that Mitra’s predecessor, the Socio-Economic Development of the Indian Community Unit (Sedic) was already riddled with issues, including the mishandling of funds, as well as a lack of accountability and transparency during the previous administration.
Halimah also said neither she nor the ministry’s director-general had a say in approving applications for funds from Mitra. - FMT
