Macc Confident Malaysia Can Achieve 25th Place In Cpi By 2033

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is confident the country can vastly improve its ranking in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) within the next 10 years.
Its deputy chief commissioner (prevention) Norazlan Razali said the anti-graft agency has targeted the 25th position in the CPI ranking by 2033, Bernama reported.
According to the CPI for 2023, Malaysia was ranked 57th out of 180 countries, up four spots from 61 in 2022.
Among Asean nations, Malaysia was in second place, behind Singapore, which ranked 5th globally.
Norazlan said that while it would not be easy, he was confident the target can be met provided all parties work with MACC to improve the country’s CPI ranking.
“We cannot expect MACC to work alone while society dreams of making Malaysia a corruption-free country. Malaysia can only reduce its corruption rate if all stakeholders think, strive, act, and engage directly in the fight against corruption.
“This collaboration is absolutely crucial,” he said in his speech at the opening ceremony of MACC’s Manjung branch in Perak today.
He added that efforts to combat corruption and promote a culture of integrity should not rely solely on MACC’s enforcement actions or educational initiatives, as it is a shared responsibility among all Malaysian citizens.
When tabling the 2025 budget last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, announced an increase in MACC’s allocation to RM360 million, up from RM338 million last year. - FMT
